Franz Liszt wordt vaak afgeschilderd als een excentriekeling en historicus Gregorovius noemde hem “Mephistopheles vermomd als een priester”. Zonderling of niet, zijn bijdrage aan het pianorepertoire is niet te overschatten. Pianiste Susanna Braun brengt een eerbetoon aan de Hongaarse componist. Beginnen doet ze met een nachtelijke bedevaart naar haar eigen Zwitserland, met ‘Les Cloches des Genève: Nocturne’. Vervolgens toont ze haar technisch kunnen in een van Liszts etudes. Verder koos ze nog voor de Sonata in si klein en de Hongaarse Rhapsody nr. 19 in re klein. Dat Liszt zich af en toe liet inspireren door een bekende naamgenoot, horen we in Das Sterbeglöcklein uit 6 Melodien von Franz Schubert. Liszt op z’n best. Hoe kan het ook anders, met een pianiste die haar masterdiploma behaalde aan de Hochschule for Musik Frans Liszt in Weimar.
Franz Liszt is often depicted as an eccentric, and the historian Gregorovius once called him “Mephistopheles disguised as a priest.” Eccentric or not, his contribution to the piano repertoire cannot be overstated. Pianist Susanna Braun pays tribute to the Hungarian composer. She begins with a nocturnal pilgrimage to her own Switzerland with Les Cloches de Genève: Nocturne. She then showcases her technical abilities in one of Liszt’s études. She also selected the Sonata in B minor and the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 19 in D minor. That Liszt occasionally drew inspiration from a famous namesake can be heard in Das Sterbeglöcklein from 6 Melodien von Franz Schubert. Liszt at his best. How could it be otherwise, with a pianist who obtained her master’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar?
