Akkoord, Mozart hield van grapjes en Chopin schreef vier scherzi, een genre waarbij we volgens de handboeken niet zelden op wat humor mogen rekenen. Toch is dit concert allesbehalve een grap. Niet minder dan zeven van de acht stukken staan in mineur toonaarden. Zo lichtvoetig als Mozart soms uit de hoek kan komen, zo zwaarmoedig klinken de twee fantasieën, de achtste sonate en het getroebleerde rondo. Bij Chopin komt de tragiek natuurlijker. Zijn vier scherzi zijn van een stormachtige en zelfs demonisch genoemde virtuositeit. Oogverblindend is trouwens ook de gouden medaille rond de nek van de Zuid-Koreaanse pianist Yekwon Sunwoo, onder wiens handen dit tweeluik tot leven komt. Het blinkende kleinood hield hij over aan zijn deelname aan de Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. En u raadt het al, met zo’n prestigieus ereteken valt evenmin te lachen. Met zijn komst en zijn koddige gewoonte om in elke stad die hij aandoet Pho-soep te eten des te meer.
Agreed, Mozart liked jokes and Chopin wrote four scherzi, a genre in which, we can often count on some humour, at least according to the manuals. Yet this concert is anything but a joke. No fewer than seven of the eight pieces are in minor keys. The two fantasies, the eighth sonata and the troubled rondo are as melancholic as Mozart can be light-hearted. With Chopin, the tragedy comes naturally. His four scherzi are of a stormy and even demonic virtuosity. The gold medal around the neck of South Korean pianist Yekwon Sunwoo, under whose hands this diptych comes to life, is also dazzling. This shining gem was for his performance at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. As you may have guessed, such a prestigious honour is also no laughing matter. His arrival and even his droll habit of eating Pho soup in every city he visits make it all the more earnest.
