De Golden 60’s zijn in het collectieve geheugen tot letterlijk gouden jaren verworden; de muziek verpersoonlijkt dat sentiment. Feeling Good, Big Spender, It Was a Very Good Year … stuk voor stuk klassiekers die, hoewel de tijden dat dan misschien veel minder doen, nu nog tot de verbeelding spreken.
De tijden veranderden: stijgende welvaart, technologische revoluties en maatschappelijk en cultureel tumult. De muzieknummers ademen hoop en de rotsvaste overtuiging dat het enkel beter zal worden. Wie van ons kan niet zo af en toe, ook al drijft het dan volledig op nostalgie, zo’n portie onversneden optimisme gebruiken?

Times were changing: rising prosperity, technological revolutions and social and cultural upheaval. The songs breathe hope and the firm belief that things will only get better. Who among us couldn’t use a dose of unadulterated optimism now and again, even if it’s based entirely on nostalgia?
