In 1938, the Entartete Musik exhibition was held in Düsseldorf. It was part of a widely orchestrated Nazi smear campaign against all forms of what they called Degenerate Art, which the NSDAP claimed could be harmful to German society. If a composer was of the wrong race or political affiliation, he or she risked being marginalized or persecuted. Stylistic elements also proved to be a factor. In particular, modernist tonal language was seen as inferior to the German classical tradition and inconsistent with the party ideology of civilization and evolution. The Flemish Radio Choir presents a selection from this then-forbidden patrimony, not all of whose composers survived the concentration camps.
