Hulst en kaarslicht. Kerst zal altijd wel iets oubollig behouden. Zowel Benjamin Britten als Francis Poulenc lieten zich ter gelegenheid van Christus’ geboorte terugvoeren naar de middeleeuwen. De eerste schreef zijn A ceremony of Carols na het lezen van vijftiende- en zestiende-eeuwse gedichten. De Gregoriaanse plechtstatigheid dan wel de opgeruimde volksmelodietjes verraden echter niets van de miserabele ontstaansgeschiedenis: op een stinkend vrachtschip te midden een van Duitse U-boten vergeven oceaan. Met weliswaar vaster grond onder voeten blikte ook Francis Poulenc terug op het verleden. Van zijn vier motetten gaat het laatste overigens terug op het Gregoriaanse antifoon waar Britten zijn Ceremony precies mee aanvangt. En zo is de cirkel rond, of toch tenminste de Adventskrans. Vrolijk kerstfeest allemaal!
Holly and candlelight. Both Benjamin Britten and Francis Poulenc took the birth of Christ back to the Middle Ages. Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols followed his reading of 15th- and 16th-century poems. Neither its Gregorian stateliness nor the tidy folk melodies betray the fact that it was composed on a foul-smelling freighter in mid-ocean, surrounded by German U-boats. Francis Poulenc also looked to the past. Of his four motets, the last refers to the Gregorian antiphon that begins Britten’s Ceremony. Thus is the Advent wreath made round.
