One thing that the MIRY Concert Hall and the Flanders Symphony Orchestra have in common is knowing that the future lies with the young. The SOV Young symphonic youth orchestra highlights this promise. In early April, these young musicians hold the second of their two annual four-day rehearsal events, assisted of course by the experienced musicians of the Flanders Symphony Orchestra. To top it off, they invest their pleasure and hard work in a free public concert. Elgar’s ‘Enigma Variations’ are an audience favourite that they will no doubt be coming across again. It waits to be seen if the new work by the newly graduated composer Benjamin Windelinckx will leave as great an impression, but the ad hoc gamblers of his alma mater, the Ghent Conservatory, are in keen anticipation.
