Het jaarlijkse Film Festival Gent vindt plaats in oktober, maar dankzij een concertreeks echoën de feestelijkheden nog een heel jaar na, een jaar nota bene waarin de veel bekroonde Poolse componist Wojciech Kilar zijn negentigste verjaardag zou hebben gevierd. Om deze gebeurtenis luister bij te zetten komen enkele tientallen van zijn landgenoten naar de Fiere Stede afgezakt. Met een oeuvre dat zowel film- als concertmuziek omvat heeft het Sinfonietta Cracovia keuze te over: tot suite bewerkte scores uit klassiekers als Bram Stoker’s Dracula en The Portrait of a Lady, het donkere tweede pianoconcerto of het symfonisch strijkersgedicht ‘Orawa’. Het geheel, dat als filmische opmaat de muziek van publiekslieveling Philip Glass meekrijgt, staat onder de vakkundige leiding van FFG muziekdirecteur, maestro Dirk Brossé.
The annual Film Festival in Ghent takes place in September, but thanks to a series of concerts, the festivities continue to echo throughout the year. This year, the prize-winning and much lauded Polish composer Wojciech Kilar would have celebrated his 90th birthday. To mark this event, a few dozen of his compatriots have descended upon our Proud City. With an oeuvre that comprises both film and concert music, the Sinfonietta Cracovia has plenty of choice, including scores from such classics as Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Portrait of a Lady, arranged as suites or ‘Orawa’, Kilar’s symphonic poem for strings. The whole serves as a cinematic prelude to the music of the audience favourite, Philip Glass, under the skilled direction of Flanders’ preeminent film virtuoso, Dirk Brossé.
