Alvorens Domenico Scarlatti zijn heil zocht in Lissabon en Madrid, waar hij zijn alom bekende klaviersonates aan het papier toevertrouwde, schreef hij als vocaal componist aan de Cappella Giulia (Rome) een indrukwekkende lijst werken bijeen. Een pareltje uit dat repertoire is het tienstemmige (!) Stabat Mater, een donker madrigaal rond een tijdloos thema: een ouder die de dood van een kind beweent. Veel hoopvoller klinkt het achtstemmige en tweekorige Te Deum, dat Scarlatti vermoedelijk componeerde tijdens zijn verblijf in Lissabon. Met het vierstemmige Magnificat in stilo antico knipoogde de componist naar the good old days, toen Palestrina het mooie weer maakte aan het Vaticaan en omstreken. Dirigent Florian Heyerick laat zich bijstaan door studenten van het Conservatorium, aangevuld met meer ervaren reservisten uit zijn Ex Temporetroepen. Het geheel wordt afgekruid met instrumentale muziek uit de oude Italiaanse doos.
Before Domenico Scarlatti sought his fortune in Lisbon and Madrid, where he set his universally renowned sonatas for keyboard to paper, he had already assembled an impressive list of works as vocals composer with the Cappella Giulia in Rome. One gem from that repertoire is his Stabat Mater for ten solo voices (!), a dark madrigal with the timeless theme of a parent mourning the death of a child. Far more hopeful in tone is his Te Deum, for eight voices in two choirs, which Scarlatti probably composed during his stay in Lisbon. His fourvoiced Magnificat in stilo antico was a wink of the eye to the good old days, when Palestrina was a force of light at and around the Vatican. Conductor Florian Heyerick guides severals students of the conservatory and his Ex Tempore team through three challenging scores. That will be topped by instrumental music from the old Italian treasure chest.
