As a child, Ottorino Respighi learned to play both the violin and piano. As a top violinist, he went to Russia and studied composition with Rimsky-Korsakov. Add to that an exceptional interest in early music and the result is scores that have the strings of the violin and the piano vibrating to the very depths of every listening heart. Violin phenomenon Vladyslava Luchenko, in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, makes a stand on behalf of Respighi’s chamber music alongside her permanent piano partner Christia Hudziy. Giuseppe Martucci, Respighi’s teacher at the Liceo Musicale in Bologna, opens the programme. To top it off is a wild Improvviso by Nino Rota, in which Gidon Kremer also occasionally sets his musical teeth.
