Tijdens de finale van de wedstrijd brengen 3 laureaten telkens het verplichte concerto ‘The Songs of Arion’ speciaal voor deze editie gecomponeerd door Erik Desimpelaere en daarnaast ook een keuzeconcerto begeleid door Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen onder leiding van Jean-François Verdier.
De mythologische figuur ‘Arion van Methymna’ was een beroemde zanger, dichter en musicus. Hij was de zoon van Poseidon en Onkaia, maar besloot zijn unieke talent voor muziek in te zetten ter ere van de god Dionysos. Zijn lievelingsinstrument was de kithara, een variant van de lier, die hij gebruikte om zijn prachtige stem te begeleiden. Hij was de grondlegger van de ‘Dithyrambe’, een uitzinnige hymnische zang waarin wijn, feestelijkheden, extase en genot de boventoon voerden. Hij nam deel aan talloze muziekwedstrijden, waar hij de prijzen aaneen reeg. Publiek en juryleden hadden nog nooit zulke opwindende en originele muziek gehoord.
In ‘The songs of Arion’ verklankt de solo klarinet de stem van Arion, tijdens een opeenvolging van virtuoze dansen en intieme lyrische passages. De solist wordt tijdens de laatste bezwerende melodieën begeleid door het strijkorkest, die de klank van kithara imiteren.
During the final of the competition, 3 laureates will each perform the compulsory concerto ‘The Songs of Arion’ composed especially for this edition by Erik Desimpelaere, as well as a choice concerto accompanied by Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen conducted by Jean-François Verdier.
The mythological figure ‘Arion of Methymna’ was a famous singer, poet and musician. His favourite instrument was the kithara, a variant of the lyre, which he used to accompany his beautiful voice. He was the founder of the ‘Dithyrambe’, a frenzied hymnic song in which wine, festivities, ecstasy and pleasure prevailed. He participated in numerous music competitions, where he racked up prizes. Audiences and judges had never heard such exciting and original music.
In ‘The songs of Arion’, the solo clarinet interprets Arion’s voice during a succession of virtuoso dances and intimate lyrical passages. During the final frenzied melodies, the soloist is accompanied by the string orchestra, who imitate the sound of kithara.
