In Brave Belgians of the Belle Époque, a study of the late-romantic Ghent horn playing tradition exploreerde Jeroen Billiet de wereld van de Gentse hoornisten in de laat-romantische periode. Vanuit het identitaire standpunt van Gents-opgeleide uitvoerder reflecteerde hij in een experimenteel methodisch kader over de mensen die deze poëtisch-gerichte hoornschool met wereldwijde vertakking vorm gaven, hun muzikale expressie en instrumenten, en de brede artistieke-educatieve wereld van de Belle Époque. Het resultaat is te lezen in een rijk gedocumenteerd doctoraatsproefschrift dat geruggesteund wordt door een omvangrijke waaier aan artistieke output.

Deze gaat door in samenwerking met het Mengal Ensemble, de hoornklas van KASK & Conservatorium en pianist Jan Huylebroeck, met werken voor hoorn van Adolphe Samuel, Martin-Joseph Mengal, Robert Herberigs; Joseph Ryelandt, François-Joseph Fétis en Jane Vignery.

In Brave Belgians of the Belle Époque, a study of the late-romantic Ghent horn playing tradition, Jeroen Billiet explored the world of Ghent horn players in the late-romantic period. From the identical standpoint of a Ghent-trained performer, he reflected within an experimental methodical framework on the people who shaped this poetically-oriented horn school with worldwide ramifications, their musical expression and instruments, and the broad artistic-educational world of the Belle Époque. The result can be read in a richly documented doctoral dissertation backed by a wide range of artistic output.
