Clara Levy & Ruben Machtelinckx bouwden de voorbije jaren allebei een welverdiende reputatie op als avontuurlijke improvisatoren. Speciaal voor Ruiskamer spelen ze voor ‘t eerst een duoset samen.
Ruben Machtelinckx‘ muziek is geëvolueerd van zachte melodieën en folkinvloeden naar een klankwereld waarin wrijving en een verborgen ongemak huizen, zonder de kracht van de songs te verliezen. Hij runt ook Aspen Edities, een onafhankelijk platenlabel voor hedendaagse muziek dat zowel geïmproviseerde muziek als composities uitbrengt, vaak gecombineerd in een eigenaardig samenspel.
Clara Lévy is een Franse violiste en improv artiest. De afgelopen jaren heeft ze verschillende soloprojecten ontwikkeld, waarbij ze nu eens de voorwaarden van het luisteren en de dramaturgie van het concert (Outre-Nuit) in vraag stelt, dan weer de soms vage grenzen tussen interpretatie en compositie (13 Visions).
Tashi Dorji heeft een intuïtieve benadering die zowel lyrisch als wild aanvoelt met improvisaties op zowel akoestische als elektrische gitaar.
Dorji’s eerste improvisaties op akoestische gitaar kwamen tot leven op een aantal tapes waarop hij de eigenschappen en grenzen tussen melodie, textuur en het onbekende verkende. Een raadselachtige visie die zich voortzette in een aantal solo- en samenwerkingsalbums met grootheden als Susie Ibarra, Mette Rasmussen, Michael Zerang of Tyler Damon. ‘we will be wherever the fires are lit’ markeert zijn terugkeer naar Drag City met een verzameling geïmproviseerde instrumentale “torch songs” voor akoestische gitaar, die een balans vinden tussen het delicate en woeste in zijn intieme uitvoering, doordrenkt met een pathos van verzet.

Ruben Machtelinckx’ music has evolved from gentle melodies and folk influences to a sound world where friction and a hidden discomfort reside, without letting go of the power of songs and strains. In extension of his musicianship he runs Aspen Edities, an independent record label for contemporary music that issues both improvised music and compositions, often combined in a peculiar interplay.

A mystifying vision that continued throughout a number of solo and collaborative albums with such luminaries as Susie Ibarra, Mette Rasmussen, Michael Zerang or Tyler Damon. ‘we will be wherever the fires are lit’ marks his return to Drag City with a collection of improvised instrumental “torch songs” for acoustic guitar, that balance the delicate and fierce in its intimate execution, imbued with a pathos of resistance.
