Rond het ontstaan van Napels bestaat een poëtische verhaal, gebaseerd op de mythe van Odysseus. Deze held wist te weerstaan aan de betoverende Sirenenzang, waarop deze halfgodinnen in rotsen veranderden. De sirene Partenope stortte zich echter in zee en op de plaats waar haar lichaam aanspoelde, zou later Napels ontstaan zijn. Geen wonder dus de stad een unieke liedtraditie kent. Duo Bel Ayre laat Partenope bij deze opnieuw aan het woord met een fijnzinnige selectie Canzoni Popolari Napolitane. Zoete melodieën worden afgewisseld met rauwe protestsongs, volkse verhaaltjes met nobel smachten, authentieke traditionele muziek met kunstliederen, waarin invloeden van verschillende culturen zijn te horen: de Griekse, de Arabische, de Spaanse, de Franse… Verder wordt het programma op smaak gebracht met een aantal instrumentale werken van de hand van gitarist-componist Peter Verhelst.
A poetic tale of the founding of Naples is based on the myth of Ulysses. The hero resisted the bewitching songs of the sirens, turning the semi-goddesses to stone. But the siren Partenope threw herself into the sea, and Naples arose where her body washed ashore. A city of song. The Bel Ayre duo revive Partenope with a refined selection of Canzoni Popolari Napolitane. Sweet melodies mix with protest songs, noble folk tales, local music influenced by so many cultures – Greek, Arabic, Spanish, French – as well as instrumental works by guitarist-composer Peter Verhelst.
