Double bill met vier piano’s plezier om de meesterlijke atonaliteit door Charlemagne Palestine & Seppe Gebruers, en een doedelzakconcert door het Schots talent Brìghde Chaimbeul, op doorreis naar de rol van leading lady in een wereld die nog te veel naar de pijpen van de mannen danst!
Charlemagne Palestine & Seppe Gebruers
Palestine en Gebruers zijn twee eigenzinnige toptalenten met een gedeelde passie voor het bespelen van meerdere piano’s tegelijk. Een common ground voor samenwerking die de New Yorkse componist, beeldend kunstenaar en beiaardier, en de Belgische pianist ontdekten in Antwerpen, tijdens een festival ter ere van de artistieke veelzijdigheid van de “Quasimodo of New York” waar Gebruers een beiaardconcert bracht in de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal.
De unieke samenwerking tussen beide artiesten ging in première tijdens Ear To The Ground in De Bijloke in Gent, waar ze de zaal omtoverden tot een kleurrijke kapel, gevuld met Palestine’s“divinities” (een hele hoop schattige knuffeldieren), en hun atonale genialiteit op vier vleugelpiano’s, waarbij Gebruers met kwarttoonstemmingen werkt, terwijl Palestine een geheel eigen(zinnige) stemming hanteert.
Ze worden soms de sjamaan en de professor genoemd, en vinden elkaar op mysterieuze wijze in een magisch klankbad. Hun samenwerking blijft een zeldzaam fenomeen, waarin zelfs de stiltes tussen de piano-overgangen doordrenkt zijn met een bijna mystieke energie. In februari 2025 releaseten ze ‘Beyondddddd The Notessssss’, een live opname in the Junxxxxxion Hall van de Fonderie Kugler in Genève, uit bij het toonaangevende Konnekt.
Brìghde Chaimbeul
Brìghde Chaimbeul is een toonaangevend hofleverancier van Keltisch experimentalisme en een meester van de Schotse smallpipes – de blaasbalgen, zachtere en emotionelere neef van de beroemde Highland doedelzakken – en die heeft ze naar het wereldpodium gebracht. Brìghde spreekt Gaelic van het Isle of Skye en verankert haar muziek in haar taal en cultuur. Ze werd bekend als een wonderkind van traditionele muziek, maar is sindsdien begonnen aan een reis om de doedelzak naar onbekend terrein te brengen. Ze heeft een geheel eigen manier van arrangeren voor doedelzakmuziek bedacht die de rijke texturale dreunen van het instrument benadrukt; de constantheid van geluid die een trance-achtige sfeer creëert, gespeeld met een verleidelijke virtuoze souplesse.
Haar meest recente album brengt invloeden van ambient, avant-garde en elektronische muziek samen. Je zou het kunnen hebben over Brìghde’s prijzen (BBC Young Folk Award; BBC Horizons Award; genomineerd voor SAY Award) en haar brede scala aan medewerkers (Caroline Polachek; Colin Stetson; Gruff Rhys; Aidan O’Rourke…) maar uiteindelijk spreekt haar muziek voor zichzelf. Beklijvend, meeslepend, adembenemend, prachtig – deze openhartige, ingetogen virtuoze performer transformeert en creëert nieuwe definities voor Schotse folk in de 21e eeuw.

Charlemagne Palestine & Seppe Gebruers
Palestine and Gebruers are two idiosyncratic top talents with a shared passion for playing multiple pianos simultaneously. A common ground for collaboration that the New York composer, visual artist and carillonneur, and the Belgian pianist discovered in Antwerp, during a festival celebrating the artistic versatility of the “Quasimodo of New York” where Gebruers performed a carillon concert in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal.
The unique collaboration between the two artists premiered during Ear To The Ground at De Bijloke in Ghent, where they transformed the hall into a colorful chapel, filled with Palestine’s “divinities” (a whole bunch of cute stuffed animals), and their atonal genius on four grand pianos, with Gebruers working with quarter-tone tunings, while Palestine uses a completely original tuning.
Sometimes called the shaman and the professor, they mysteriously find each other in a magical sound bath. Their collaboration remains a rare phenomenon, in which even the silences between piano transitions are imbued with an almost mystical energy. In February 2025, they released ‘Beyondddddddd The Notessssss’, a live recording at the Junxxxxxion Hall of the Fonderie Kugler in Geneva, from the leading Konnekt.
Brìghde Chaimbeul
Brìghde Chaimbeul is a leading purveyor of celtic experimentalism and a master of the Scottish smallpipes – the bellows-blown, mellower and more emotive cousin to the famous Highland bagpipes – and she’s taken them to the global stage. A native Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Skye, Brìghde roots her music in her language and culture. She rose to prominence as a prodigy of traditional music, but has since begun a journey to take the smallpipes into uncharted territory. She has devised a completely unique way of arranging for pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the instrument; the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like atmosphere, played with enticing virtuosic liquidity.
She draws inspiration from the world of interconnected piping traditions, and her most recent album brings in influence from ambient, avant garde and electronic music. One can talk about Brìghde’s awards (BBC Young Folk Award; BBC Horizons Award; SAY Award nominee) and her wide array of collaborators (Caroline Polachek; Colin Stetson; Gruff Rhys; Aidan O’Rourke…) but after it all, her music speaks for itself. Haunting, entrancing, breathtaking, beautiful – this open-eared, understatedly virtuosic performer is transforming and creating new definitions for Scottish folk in the 21st century.
